Dylan O’Brien Stars as Latest Breed of Hitman-Hero in “American Assassin”

Published

on

A one-of-a-kind American assassin possessed of savage skills and a ferocious drive for payback is born in this non-stop action-espionage thriller “American Assassin” starring Dylan O’Brien (Maze Runner franchise) in the title role. Rooted in the raw reality of today’s hard-to-detect enemies invisible black ops, high-level surveillance, portable nukes and murky agendas, the movie is athe story of a 21st Century counterterrorist spymaster-in-the-making who, in a world of new rules, breaks all the old molds.

Based on the mega-bestselling book series by the late Vince Flynn, “American Assassin” introduces film audiences to one of contemporary fiction’s most popular heroes working in the shadows: CIA super-agent Mitch Rapp. When Rapp’s promising future is torn apart by a shocking burst of violence, it ignites his career as a clandestine warrior on the frontlines of the Age of Terror. Now he must discover how to turn his blistering rage into fuel for hunting those who would destroy others’ dreams – in a world where clarity isn’t easy to come by.

“American Assassin” traces Rapp’s origins from heartbroken fiancé to cunning renegade to off-thecharts CIA trainee to his first must-not-fail mission on the trail of 15 kilos of stolen plutonium. The film brings together rising star Dylan O’Brien – who creates the no-holds-barred Rapp for the first time on screen – with Oscar® nominee and Golden Globe® winner Michael Keaton as legendary CIA trainer Stan Hurley. Seeking to right his own devastating mistakes, Hurley prepares Rapp to join Orion, the most deeply concealed network within the CIA. But even as Hurley teaches Rapp that spy work can’t be personal, Rapp makes personal connections that help him penetrate a web of mercenaries, arms dealers, extremists and an angry ex-agent not unlike himself, all colluding to spark a new World War.

The story takes off with propulsive speed, with one white-knuckle action sequence topping the last, brought to life by a team of filmmakers who know the territory: director Michael Cuesta (“Homeland”), screenwriters Stephen Schiff (“The Americans”), Michael Finch (“The November Man”), Edward Zwick & Marshall Herskovitz (“The Last Samurai,” “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back”) and producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura (“Salt,” “RED”) and Nick Wechsler (“The Road,” “Under The Skin”). Cuesta creates the film as a rough but riveting transcontinental journey that careens from Washington D.C. to Istanbul to Rome to the deck of a U.S. aircraft carrier…and right into the moral gray zones of our world in 2017.

Says Cuesta: “This is the origin story of Mitch Rapp – as he transforms from a man seeking personal vengeance to a professional who operates with a fierce sense of justice. I’m excited to have fans of the books and everyone else get to see Dylan O’Brien become Mitch. Dylan has a very contemporary appeal as an action star for this millennia, and I think audiences are going to love his interaction with Michael Keaton who nails Hurley’s tough-guy persona like a 21st Century John Wayne.”

“American Assassin” opens September 13 in cinemas from Pioneer Films.

Zac Efron Delivers Winning Musical Performance in “The Greatest Showman”

Published

on

Zendaya and Zac Efron star in Twentieth Century Fox's "The Greatest Showman."

Nurturing an impressive body of work that encompasses both film and television, Zac Efron has proven to be one of Hollywood’s most sought-after talents. Efron became a household name with the launch of the 2006 Emmy Award-winning Disney Channel phenomenon “High School Musical” as Troy Bolton. He reprised his role as Troy Bolton, head of the basketball team, in “High School Musical 2,” which broke cable TV records garnering 17.5 million viewers. Zac also starred in the Disney feature film “High School Musical 3: Senior Year,” the third installment of the extremely successful High School Musical franchise. HSM3 set a box office record as the highest grossing opening weekend total for a musical. He also starred in the box-office smash summer film “Hairspray,” which won the Critics’ Choice award for Best Ensemble.

Continuing his box-office breaking records with musicals, Efron gives an all-out different kind of performance in his latest movie “The Greatest Showman” with Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Keala Settle and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II directed by Michael Gracey who makes his feature film debut.

Hugh Jackman stars as the visionary innovator, P.T. Barnum, who invented show business in “The Greatest Showman.” Raised in a poor family, and through the sheer scope of his imagination and tenacity, Barnum sets about achieving the impossible, launching his groundbreaking circus and in the process, transforming entertainment. Efron takes on the role of Phillip Carlyle, an upper-class New York thespian and entrepreneur, the kind of person who looks down on Barnum’s circus until he’s asked to work with the charismatic impresario.

Though much of The Greatest Showman is drawn from the outlines of P.T. Barnum’s life, the fictional characters of Efron and Zendaya bring in fresh points of view. Carlyle also intrigued him. “Phillip Carlyle is someone who has grown up very privileged, but he’s not happy where he’s at and he feels very sort of caged in and jaded,” Efron explains. “Then he meets Barnum and he sees that P.T. just doesn’t care what people think. It’s liberating for Phillip and the beginning of a great friendship.”

For Efron, Carlyle’s first experience in Barnum’s circus is one of a man having the haze lifted from his eyes. It becomes more than an epiphany when his eyes meet those of aerialist Anne Wheeler (Zendaya). The character gave Efron the chance to get caught up in the kind of cinematic moment that most inspires him. “Falling in love in a musical number on camera is one of my absolute favorite things to do in the world,” he confesses. “I’m not ashamed to say it. I know it’s pretend but when you get to live in that kind of moment for a scene or two, it feels amazing. It brings you back to Gene Kelly and Singin’ In The Rain. Are there any better ways to express true love than in song?”

The love story between Phillip and Anne also involves a 3rd party – Anne’s brother and aerial partner, W.D. Wheeler, portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who plays villain in the forthcoming “Aquaman” and star of Netflix’s “The Get Down.” Says Efron: “Although Phillip’s feelings for Anne are completely real and justified, they’re also forbidden by society at that time and it’s really sad. That was a very different time — though even today, social boundaries and differences go on preventing love and preventing people from uniting with one another. The big breakthrough for Phillip, I think, is that moment he realizes that you don’t have to live within the constraints that everyone else has drawn. You don’t have to follow rules that are wrong. You don’t have to color inside the lines. You can be your own person.”

“The Greatest Showman” opens January 31 (also available in IMAX screens) in theaters nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Deadliest Rescue Mission in “Maze Runner: The Death Cure” Begins January 24 Nationwide

Published

From (L-R), Katherine McNamara, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jacob Lofland, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Dylan O'Brien, Rosa Salazar, and Dexter Darden star in Twentieth Century Fox's "Maze Runner: The Death Cure."

Action reaches new heights in this mission-oriented third and final segment of The Maze Runner Series, “Maze Runner: The Death Cure.” The Wes Ball-directed adaptation of the bestselling James Dashner YA trilogy is a 20th Century Fox production. The screenplay was written by T.S. Nowlin. Producers are Ellen Goldsmith-Vein of The Gotham Group, Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen of Temple Hill Productions Joe Hartwick, Jr., Wes Ball, and Lee Stollman.

“Maze Runner: The Death Cure,” picks up roughly six months after the Scorch Trials ended. In the final battle of The Scorch the survivors of The Flare, a disease that has devastated the world’s population, have defined their purpose; to find a safe haven away from the influence of WCKD. This exciting conclusion of the Maze Runner trilogy reunites many of the original cast members from 2014’s The Maze Runner; Dylan O’Brien as Thomas; Kaya Scodelario as Teresa; Ki Hong Lee as Minho; Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Newt; Dexter Darden as Frypan and Patricia Clarkson as Dr. Ava Paige along with newer cast members from Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials; Giancarlo Esposito as Jorge, Rosa Salazar as Brenda, Aidan Gillen as Janson, Barry Pepper as Vince and Walton Goggins as Lawrence.

Uncertain if this “last city” had even survived, the “Gladers” knew that somehow gaining entry would be difficult. To then break in to the WKCD headquarters where Minho was being held, that was impossible. For Thomas, setting difficult goals was not unusual. As Dylan O’Brien says of his character, “In the first movie the challenge was to solve the maze, to break out of the glade. A big part of the group, led by Gally, wanted no part of that. They looked at the glade as their home and they were safe. In Scorch Trials we were out of the maze, had a building to live in and were taken care of but there was a price to pay. In this film, in Death Cure, Thomas wants to break in to the place that caused all of this to save his friend Minho, which he promised he’d do. Most thought it was a crazy plan.”

The final chapter gets even more WCKD in IMAX screens with the movie having an expanded ratio of 26% more of all scenes than the average cinemas. That’s 26% more of the action, suspense, and adventure! Coupled with IMAX’s gigantic screen, crystal-clear images, and powerful digital audio, it will feel like you’re truly part of the action.

End the final Mazer runner in the theatres where movies come alive – IMAX and SM Cinema! Book your tickets now on to www.smcinema.com. Download the SM Cinema app now through the App store and Google Play. For more information follow /SMCinema on facebook and @SM_Cinema on Instagram

No friend is left behind when “Maze Runner: The Death Cure” opens January 24 in all cinemas and in all IMAX screens nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.
