(Cebu Province website) — The local government of Dalaguete town, south of Cebu presented various anti-poverty plans for the town to Malacañang and Cebu Provincial Government officials during the launching of Salubungan, a poverty reduction project of the national government.

These projects will be implemented with the cooperation of different public and private sectors.

Dalaguete mayor Ronald Cesante and representatives from national agencies, private companies, and non-government organizations explored ways of engaging the poor and addressing possible implementation issues.

For highland poor and farm laborers, Cesante shared that Dalaguete LGU plans to provide farm inputs, credit support, and product research on chayote as the town has been producing 10 tons of it weekly.

These projects are implemented starting May this year through the cooperation of Dalaguete LGU, Department of Agriculture and the Department of Science and Technology.

He also said skills training on community-based tour guiding and installation of signage to Osmeña Peak will be implemented by June.

There is also an ongoing hiring of laborers from midland poor communities for agro-forestry projects under the National Greening Program of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources as well as for fiber crops production and coconut plantation, added Cesante.

Skills trainings on carpentry, computer hardware services, customer services, food processing and others will be conducted for the whole year to coastal poor communities under the supervision of Technical Education and Skills Development Authority and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.

“Naa mi existing training centers sa Dalaguete. Ang amo lang, kani amoang gi request karon, wala ni sa mga existing training centers nga gikinahanglan pud kaayo namo (We have existing training centers in Dalaguete now but what we are requesting are needed trainings that have not been conducted in our town yet),” said Carlo Bejarasco, bottom-up budgeting officer of Dalaguete.

Bejarasco also revealed that midland and coastal poor communities will be granted livelihood support for their small and medium enterprises leveraging industry network for supply chain and skills training on fish processing.

SMEs will also be implemented on June this year under the Department of Labor and Employment as well as the pickled vegetables processing under the Department of Trade Industry.
